It takes a village: renovation update

Today, hubby and I swung by the Melody Project for a quick tag up with our closet vendor. We were greeted by a driveway full of vans. The house was buzzing with activity–framers upstairs, flooring being laid on the main level, the HVAC guys ripping out endless coils of duct work and insulation downstairs, all while we attempted to pick out drawer knobs for the master closet. FYI–it’s rather difficult conducting business over the shrill of multiple table saws.

Alas, we picked our drawer knobs.

Something that never ceases to amaze me is the number of hands that play a part in renovation projects. It truly takes a village. The loud, buzzing saws, the blunt wack of hammers, the sweet sounds of progress and teamwork.

Windows!

Old, tired windows were removed, and my visionary husband designed a brand new window plan for the house, which is beginning to totally transform the front elevation.

Some thought we were crazy to lop off a bay window, but we knew this house needed clean lines, and large expanses of glass.

Stay tuned…things are getting exciting!

The “This House Is Tore Up” Phase

We’ve come to the phase of house renovations where things look really bad…and by bad I mean good.

Entire second story floors are missing–and you can see straight down at the contractors below.

Dilapidated siding has been ripped off, leaving swaths of naked house.

Very old and very gross insulation has been removed, evidenced in heaps on the floor.

Things look bad–but that is definitely a good thing.

Note to self: Progress is not always pretty.

Here are a few pics as the #MelodyRenovation moves along.

Knocked down a wall to open up the dining room. Bonus: vaulted ceilings for the win.

The Next “Randallized” House Project: 2018

Randalls Front Porch

Welcome to the new site of all things Randall Home Design. Some of you might be new..so glad you found us 🙂

As I write this, we officially have 14 days left in 2017. (How???)

This has been another whirlwind year. If you’ve been following our home adventures, you may remember that we sold our last house in April of this year. BITTERSWEET, let me tell you. (You can see the highlight video of the finished home here). #tear

We gave ourselves a little break after selling and moving out, and then like true addicts, we starting fiending for our next project. We had our eye on a sizeable, charming, dilapidated foreclosure nestled in a wooded cul-de-sac.

I won’t go on and on about the roller coaster of trying to buy a foreclosure, the long waiting game, the dashed hopes, and then more waiting. After a few months of emotional torture, we got the official yes on my birthday. This big, dilapidated, ramshackle was all ours!

My husband and I have been heads down in project planning spreadsheets, Pinterest boards, and plenty of meetings with our contractors. There have been several long nights and weekends, even before swinging a single sledgehammer. What do they say? Measure twice, cut once? Well…yeah, we’re in that phase.

After the new year, the sledgehammers will be a swangin’. And we can’t wait to share every exciting, dusty, overwhelming, creative moment with you.

Thanks for journeying along. Happy Holidays!
